1 Peter 5:5b-7

“GOD IS OPPOSED TO THE PROUD, BUT GIVES GRACE TO THE HUMBLE. Therefore humble yourselves under the mighty hand of God, that He may exalt you at the proper time, casting all your anxiety on Him, because He cares for you” (NASB1995).

“Cast all your cares upon Him because He cares for you” was the version the Psalty the Singing Songbook sang back in the early 1990’s. Yes, showing my age a bit. While pondering casting my cares, or anxieties upon the Lord, a thought came to mind. Am I casting my anxieties as a fisherman casting his line, increasing the likelihood of fishing them back out before the Lord is done with them? Or, am I casting them as a stone into the river – less likely to be seen upon this shore again, except the ripple effect? My husband likes to fish using bank poles. Perhaps that is a better balance between the two. This way, the line is cast but not checked until there is a change in status of the pole once something is caught on the hook. In a way, the posture of the pole is humbled once securing the intended catch. Or even the unintended catch. And while waiting, the fisherman is free to work on other tasks without the burden of holding the pole. We are free to serve the Lord’s purposes when we cast our cares and leave them with Him.

Heavenly Father,

Thank You for choosing us. Thank You for allowing us to experience life without You so we understand how much better life is with You. Help us to trade our anxieties for your care for us. Help us to let go of whatever is holding us back from fully trusting in You.

In the name of Jesus we pray,

AMEN
