Drop Ninety-Three
Ephesians 4:29-32
“Let no unwholesome word proceed from your mouth, but only such a word as is good for edification according to the need of the moment, so that it will give grace to those who hear. Do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, by whom you were sealed for the day of redemption. Let all bitterness and wrath and anger and clamor and slander be put away from you, along with all malice. Be kind to one another tenderhearted, forgiving each other, just as God in Christ has forgiven you” (NASB1995).
Recently, a friend requested clarification regarding “edification according to the need of the moment”, such as “an example that would give grace rather than be ‘unwholesome’.” Oh, if only I had meditated on this verse more in my life, I may have avoided many “pickles”. The example I shared, I will now share here. Recently I stated something in jest to my husband who responded with sharp words. Rather than accept and respond to the wounding potential of his words, I paused. I actually left the room and soon returned. I then noticed that he looked tired, a bit worn, and appeared to be experiencing some pain. I then asked how his day had been. He shared the events of the day that led to his demeaner. Our conversation softened and both our needs were met. Proverbs 12:18 states, “There is one who speaks rashly like the thrusts of a sword, But the tongue of the wise brings healing” (NASB1995). Still working to apply the wisdom I learned a few years ago – attack problems, not people.
Heavenly Father,
Thank You for your faithfulness. We are so thankful for your unrelenting love for us, and your patience. You promise to forgive us as we forgive others. We release all hurt, anger, malice, bitterness and any desire to slander others to You. In exchange, we accept your power to forgive others as You have forgiven us. May our thoughts, words and deeds be submissive to the promptings of the Holy Spirit to the glory of your marvelous name.
In the name of Jesus we pray,
AMEN
